For club practice, wrestlers will need to wear a T-shirt or athletic shirt with athletic pants/shorts. Wrestlers are not required to wear wrestling shoes or a singlet. Head gear is not required during practice but is strongly recommended. Mouth pieces are not required during practice but are strongly recommended. As for tournaments, it is not required that wrestlers wear a singlet or wrestling shoes but headgear and a mouth piece are required during competition. For freestyle season, wrestlers will be required to wear a red/blue interchangeable singlet during competition.
No, in fact if it is their first year in our program we do no recommend they compete unless they have prior experience. We want competition to be a good experience and therefore if done too early can damage the wrestler and their liking of the sport. If wrestlers are ready to compete than we highly recommend taking them to as many tournaments as they want to go to. The more mat experience they get, the better. However, at a young age we believe it should still be fun so listen to your child and what their needs/wants are.
Yes. However, we do not guarantee there will be a club coach at the tournament. If interested in another tournament is high and a coach is available, we will consider sending a coach, but this is not guaranteed. The club tries to choose a variety of tournaments to attend for the year and also looks at how the tournaments are run in hopes for positive experiences.
Club tournament vary in length. Most tourneys start very early and can last all day. Other tournaments are run very smooth and can conclude in the early afternoon. Tournaments are all run different but a majority of them weigh the wrestlers in at the beginning of the day, then place wrestlers into brackets. Once placed into brackets, wrestlers begin to wrestle until placement is determined. Other tourney may block weights which set a limit on the number of wrestlers per division and weight class. This might limit the number of matches your child will receive.
Many times other sports, events, and life get in the way of the long wrestling season. We understand this happens. Wrestlers are not penalized for missing practices. The wrestling season typically runs from Late November - Early May. If a wrestler can only join for part of the season, that is fine. There are no discounts or refunds for people who choose not to participate in the entire season.
